Review of “Dead Air”

GSR Fan Kristen Elizabeth titled her review Just … ARGH!! and I think that sums it up.

But…and this is key…that plan should make sense for the characters. At no point should the audience feel that the writers have forgotten the character’s core traits or the history that has shaped them, and in all honesty, sometimes I think the writers forget just how strong Sara is and how much she’s overcome in her life. I mean, last season they forgot she had a brother, remember? Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. While it’s true that Sara has tender spots, they should never be mistaken for weakness. She was never afraid to confront Grissom about their relationship when they were on much shakier ground; why has that suddenly changed now that they’re married?

  1. She makes an especially good point! That’s part of why I’m somewhat surprised by Sara’s reaction to all this & how she’s been handling it… In past seasons she was the one to always confront Grissom & make her feelings known & she never seemed to be afraid, & showed confidence in herself even when he seemed to be afraid. Now all of a sudden, they’re doing exactly what she said. Making her sensitive & reserved spots seem like weaknesses instead of positives that make Sara Sara. The strong, compassionate, outspoken, witty, etc. person that we all love. You can say “Grissoms just being Grissom”, but you can’t say Sara’s just being Sara.

  2. A lot of good points in that review. For me personally the whole “GSR marriage in trouble” situation as they’re presenting it to us is OOC- I’d imagine that after all that the two of them have been through they’d put their relationship first and not allow work/distance/whichever stand in the way if it was causing a trouble and would never let it get so bad that they’re communicating via voicemails/avoiding calls/spending anniversaries apart etc. So I’m struggling to buy the idea that Sara would stay in Vegas and Grissom god-knows-where while their marriage is seemingly in trouble. Sara’s “hello” at the end of last episode sounded the most gut-wrenchingly sad and vulnerable, I don’t believe Grissom would stay away knowing that she’s clearly not alright.
Having said that breaking them up would be THE most OOC move writers could possibly make so I just hope they’ll write them out of this storyline with the least heartache for all of us.
I guess it also doesn’t help that there are a lot of writers, new writers too- understandably each with their own views and ideas, but I have a feeling not all of them care for/see GSR in the same way:(

  3. If GSR breaks up I will never recover :O

    • Lee Bartholomew says:

it’d be the end of CSI. It’d be like the show divorcing from it’s fans. It’d never ever recover. And it took them how long to find Ted?

  4. I agree with the previous posters. The ‘old’ writers did a great job of developing two unique individuals who were able to circumvent their egos to get together and have a strong and meaningful relationship. These ‘new’ writers don’t seem to have a clue how to handle it.

    • Besides, what’s wrong with sacrificing a bit of yourself for someone else? It’s called ‘love’. It’s something most people search their whole life to find. And they would do most anything to protect and nurture it.

  5. I have some mixed feelings about this paragraph, so … my two cents.

First, I think she has a good point. The writers often forget key things about the characters and they play with continuity a little too fluidly for those who obsess over the show. (The episode this season with Eli is a good example – they’d stated at some point that Warrick wanted Tina to have his grandmother’s house yet, in Empty Eyes, it’s alluded to that the house he grew up in had long been sold.) Also, Eli seemed a bit old. So you have these little twists and turns with the writing but as far as I remember it, Sara’s brother is only mentioned once, in an early season and it could easily be written off per canon as a foster brother. So tweaking canon like that doesn’t bother me so much as it could in this situation.

But honestly, it doesn’t matter how strong you are or how much you’ve come through, sometimes you get tired. And watching the relationship have issues doesn’t feel OOC to me. Inferring from what we’ve seen, there have probably been plenty of “why can’t we talk more” phone calls. Hell, even in “The Two Mrs. Grissoms” – which was 2 years ago – he’s still in Peru when he should have been at the party. That flight can run ten to twelve hours, he couldn’t have called her before and saved her the embarrassment of going to a party like that by herself?

The way I’ve interpreted it is that Sara is just tired of fighting right now. There comes a point in a relationship where you have to be and it seems to me that Sara is at that point. Whatever is going on, she’s just … running on fumes when it comes to it. It’s one of the things I LOVE about the relationship with DB. He’s been married forever. He understands ups and downs and roundabouts. And right now, she’s in a roundabout.

So no, I don’t think the writers are walking away from who she is at her core. I think she’s tired and I think Jorja’s acting is showing that beautifully.

    • This.

Character growth is a wonderful thing. We’ve seen Sara develop and mature, and it’s reasonable for her to make mistakes.

  6. I guess what I personally can’t understand is that neither Sara nor Grissom are doing anything about the LDR situation that’s clearly not working for them anymore(well, certainly not for Sara)
What she was saying(somewhat wistfully) about her house being like vic’s and bringing work home in “Dead Air” reminded me of “You’ve got male” episode(season 2 or 3?) when she could see the resemblances between her and vic’s lifestyles(not in good way). But she’s come a loong way since then! It’s sad hearing her say things like that now.

    • At the risk of getting to personal… It’s really easy to let things spiral out of control like that. Even if you’re an opinionated person, who takes care of herself, it’s possible for circumstances, and sometimes brain chemistry, to make it so that you just can’t dig yourself out of the pit.

Yes, it’s sad hearing anyone say that, but knowing that there’s a plan makes me think CSI will find a way out, or to somewhere else at least, and that’s just good TV :) It’s understandable for someone to regress, make mistakes, and not accept the help that’s offered. It’s horrible, but it happens a lot to a lot of us.

(And yes, I’m fine now, seriously ;) )

  7. AbraCadaver says:

If the writers can have Hodges getting engaged to a gorgeous Italian model, they can pretty much do anything they want to GSR. That makes me sad.

    • What’s wrong with Hodges and an Italian Model? It makes a lot more sense to me than the ‘Stunning Wife, Schlubby Husband’ phenomenon we see in sitcoms.

      • AbraCadaver says:

Hodges and the Italian model is the second science fiction episode the writers have given us, the first being “A Space Oddity”. I have never liked Hodges and have often wished the writers would get rid of him. Sorry, Ipstenu.

        • Science Fiction? I can understand not liking him (I never really liked Catherine), but that part lost me :) Far fetched perhaps?

          • AbraCadaver says:

I was being facetious. I like your far fetched description much better. Somehow I think the model wants something from Hodges, like American citizenship, perhaps?

          • Heh, that would be an interesting story line! :D

          • Totally agree about Catherine. And “Redrum” didn’t do much to help her case. That ep still makes me ugh when I watch it. Lol I would love to of been a fly on the wall when Sara talked to her in private. Lol
As for Hadges, I don’t mind letting him have his fun. BUT that doesn’t mean they can do whatever with GSR. Lets be serious here;)

  8. I wonder if the new set of writers actually have read the old scripts or watched any of the old episodes. It is a shame that they do not know the history of GSR and know how strong willed of a character SARA is and knows the history behind Gil and Sara relationship.
I am sorry writers/ TPTB have done a terrible job explaining what the heck Grissom is doing out of the country and why he has not come home. Come on it is time to bring Gil home to be with his wife weather it is on screen or off screen.
