Catherine Willows is a fictional character featured in the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She is depicted by Marg Helgenberger.
History
When they first met, Catherine was clearly prepared to hate Sara.[1] Since then, Catherine grew to warily accept the younger CSI. Not that Catherine doesn't give Sara guff now and then, but Sara rarely snaps back. They've managed to achieve a mostly peaceable working relationship, which did not change with Catherine being demoted back down to team member (rather than supervisor) in season six. Their working relationship should not be confused with friendship, however.
Sara disapproves of Catherine's tendency to use her sexuality as a tool.[2] Catherine is cautious when going up against authority, and while she is willing to occasionally question the boss, she more often sides with authority and against other CSIs. Friendly with Grissom, Catherine has told him that he needs to be firm with the other CSIs - especially Sara.[3]
Only twice has Sara really talked back to Catherine or taken her to task for the way she works; in both cases [4] [2] Sara has gotten right in Catherine's face and has told her what she thinks about Catherine. In regards to Sara, Catherine is not on Sara's side, even to the point of telling Greg that she wouldn't do anything for Sara.[2] When Catherine stages a crime scene, Sara is one of the people who call her one it. [5]
Catherine and Sara are often at loggerheads, and seem to have a friendly love/snipe relationship. While they have occasionally supported each other, Catherine seems uninterested in a non-work relationship with Sara, and more often than not, they openly oppose each other.
When Sara returns to Las Vegas to help the Graveyard shift, both women seem to have matured in their relationship. Catherine opens up to Sara about the difficulty being Shift Supervisor and, in return, Sara provides an outsider's perspective that helps Catherine become both a great CSI and a good supervisor. [6]
Romantic Relationship
There are people who ship Sara and Catherine together, though common consensus seems to be that if there was a relationship, it would never develop on camera. The primary cause of this is the sole attempt of Catherine comforting Sara, after Hank's cheating ways were revealed.[7]
